Writers and Directors, learn how to allow your story (168 or not) to achieve it’s full potential at the Story Lab.
PROGRAM: Host Derrick Warfel and other writer-directors will evaluate and discuss (respectfully and constructively) scenes from a 168 film and compare to scenes from a major motion picture with similar story and theme.
WRITERS LEARN: 1. Common story mistakes in Speed Filmmaking 2. Choosing the most powerful story 3. Creating compelling, believable characters 4. Writing realistic, powerful dialogue 5. Communicating: leaving the cheese in the dairy aisle 6. Riveting dramatic structure - the scene.
DIRECTORS LEARN: 1. Tips on directing actors in engaging performances 2. Thinking visually

SEPT. 11 - Story Lab Focus: "The Test," a 2009 nominated film based on Proverbs 1:8-10 and produced by students from Crenshaw Arts and Technical Charter High School (CATCH) with help from the 168 community. "Test" examines the importance of honesty and integrity in early life decisions, and follows the journey of inner-city high school kids as they prepare for responsible adulthood.
Oct. 2 – Story Lab Focus: "The Last Laugh," a 2009 nominated film based on Genesis 22:2. Produced by McCall Jones, Susan Shearer and Amber Deegan. "Laugh" stars SNL’s Victoria Jackson as a Comedy Club Owner facing marital struggles that pit her dreams against her husband’s business success.
Oct. 16 – Story Lab Focus: "Obedience," a 2009 film based on Exodus 20:12. Produced by Caleb G. Brown, Matthew Abate, and Naomi Kasa. "Obedience" reveals mysterious messages which guide a man who has no clue about interpersonal relationships or navigating office politics.
Nov. 6th - Story Lab Focus: "The Call," a 2009 nominated film based on Luke 18:29-30. Produced by David and Jerusha Kiang, "Call" examines family decisions in the end times, as the government forces all citizens to take the mark of the beast in order to buy and sell.
