Writers and Directors, learn how to allow your story (168 or not) to achieve it’s full potential at the Story Lab.
PROGRAM: Host Derrick Warfel and other writer-directors will evaluate and discuss (respectfully and constructively) scenes from a 168 film and compare to scenes from a major motion picture with similar story and theme.
WRITERS LEARN: 1. Common story mistakes in Speed Filmmaking 2. Choosing the most powerful story 3. Creating compelling, believable characters 4. Writing realistic, powerful dialogue 5. Communicating: leaving the cheese in the dairy aisle 6. Riveting dramatic structure - the scene.
DIRECTORS LEARN: 1. Tips on directing actors in engaging performances 2. Thinking visually

AUGUST 27 - Story Lab Focus: "Moya", a 2010 nominated film based on Exodus 20:20 and produced by Caleb G. Brown and Joshua M. Bott. Directed by Daniel and David Holecheck. "Moya" tells the story of a troubled married man who while being unfaithful to his wife gets caught up in saving a newborn from a vengful Russian Mafia boss.
SEPTEMBER 10 -Story Lab Focus: "Out of the Fire", a 2010 nominated film based on Deuteronomy 4:35-36 produced and directed by first time filmmaker Jeanette Reedy Solano. In "Out of the Fire" a former gangmember-prisoner is forced to make a choice between two families and hears God's voice in an unexpected place.
SEPTEMBER 24 -Story Lab Focus: "Forsaken", a 2010 nominated film based on Isaiah 30:15 produced and directed by David Kiang. After their daughter is killed in a tragic accident, an estranged wife must choose to love her husband by rescuing him from his entrapment in a surreal world where he believes he can keep their daughter alive.
OCTOBER 16 - Story Lab Focus: "Bountiful", a 2010 nominated film based on John 15:1-2 and produced by 168 vets Susan Shearer and Amber Deegan. Directed by Eric Tozzi. "Bountiful" tells the story of a gambler who through a car crash gets a supernatural glimpse of the future and how his decisions today will affect those he loves.
OCTOBER 29 - Story Lab Focus: "Skip Listening", a 2010 nominated film based on Nehemiah 8:9b-10 and produced by Christopher Shawn Shaw, Josh B. Jacobs, and Colleen Bennett. Directed by Christopher Shawn Shaw. "Skip Listening" is a romantic comedy where a tragic accident teaches a narcissistic DJ to listen after he loses his hearing.
NOVEMBER 12 - Story Lab Focus: "Through My Sister's Eyes", a 2010 nominated film based on John 8:12 and produced by first time producer Mark Weber. Directed by Winston Titus Tao. "Through My Sister's Eyes" tells a visionary tale of a young cancer victim who loses her sight.
